Budding designer Joe Salmon is the proud owner of a Kindle Fire after producing the winning logo for a new computer system at Investec Specialist Bank.
Children at Amherst Primary School were given the opportunity to showcase their design skills in a competition run by the bank, for its new system called Acacia.
The Year 3 pupil’s design impressed the judges, who were overwhelmed by the standard of entries.
‘There are some very talented children at Amherst and this was obvious in the entries we received to our design a logo competition. The level of thought and creativity was fabulous and Joe was a very deserved winner,’ said Stephen Henry, head of Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited.
‘We decided to give a Kindle as a prize because it helps to promote reading and demonstrates the importance Investec places on education.’
The new internal intranet system, Acacia, was named by employee Susan Atkinson in an in-house competition.
The name was chosen because acacia trees are the main source of food for the zebra – Investec’s iconic symbol.
The bank needed a logo to go with it and decided it was an ideal opportunity to access the skills of the children at the school with which they have a charitable partnership.
Seven-year-old Joe has always loved drawing. When he heard about the Investec competition he couldn’t wait to get started.
‘I thought it would be really fun to design a logo. We were told that the name of the computer system was Acacia, so I looked it up on the computer and came up with the idea of having the letters of the word in the branches of the tree,’ he said.
Joe had no idea that he had won the competition until his name was read out in assembly.
‘It was incredible, I couldn’t believe it. I can’t wait to use my Kindle,’ he said.
Runners-up prizes of £20 book vouchers were given to Zoe Sneddon from Year 6, Year 5 pupil Jessica Tostevin, Skye Carre in Year 4 and Year 2 pupil Shanaya Le Poidevin. Everyone who took part received an Investec zebra biscuit.
It is the latest in a series of initiatives the bank has been involved with at the school. Each year Investec takes a group of Year 6 pupils to camp on Lihou and earlier this year the bank helped launch a Breakfast Club, funded by staff initiatives, including cake sales, dress down days and a Three Peaks Challenge.
‘I am very proud of the standard of the entries in the competition, there were some fantastic designs that a lot of thought had gone into. The winning design was incredible, Joe is such a talented boy, his artwork is just wonderful,’ said Amherst Primary School head teacher Tracey Moore.
‘We are so very grateful for the support we received from the staff at Investec, who have been absolutely fantastic over the last few years. They are very hands on and give our children at Amherst some wonderful opportunities they may not otherwise have.’
