Autism: from awareness…to acceptance

MEDIA RELEASE: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and not Bailiwick Express, and the text is reproduced exactly as supplied to us

In 2021, based on feedback, the National Autistic Society changed the name of a fundraising campaign to World Autism Acceptance Week (from World Autism Awareness Week).

We’ve come a long way in the past 60 years, and today almost everyone has heard of autism. But far too few people understand what it’s like to be autistic – both the strengths you can have and how hard life can be at times.

No one should feel judged for being autistic or have to wait many months or even years for a potentially life-changing diagnosis, vital help and support. We need society to change. Autistic children, adults, and their families just want to be understood, supported, and accepted in their communities, schools and workplaces.

After this name change, it’s brought about a conversation that gets us all thinking about how society still needs to make changes to support autistic people. We think it’s important to keep that conversation going for 2023.

World Autism Acceptance Week will be running from Monday 27 March to Sunday 2 April.

Autism Jersey will have a branded gazebo at Charing Cross from Monday 27 March to Saturday 1st April, where staff, and colleagues who are professionals supporting adults and young people will be in attendance to provide some insight to those who want to know more – teams will be there from Jersey Youth Service, ASCIT (Autism and Social Communication Inclusion Team)  who provide an advisory service to schools, and hopefully JAAS (Jersey Adult Autism Service ) as well as Autism Jersey.  There will be lots of information, merchandise – and, of course, branded cupcakes!
