A valiant bunch of islanders are back home after a challenging trek in the Balkans which raised £35,000 for Jersey Cheshire Home.

The group of 19, ranging in age from 25 to 67 conquered three of the highest peaks in Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania and Macedonia.

They started theiradventure in Kosovo on 11thSeptember scaling Mt Gjeravica (2,656m), the second  highest peak in the DinaricAlps range. From Kosovo, they crossed borders through wild remote  landscapes into Montenegro to climb Mt Zla Kolata (2,534m) and finished via Albania and  Macedonia’s highest peak Mt Korab (2751m).

Donna Abel, CEO Jersey Cheshire Home who was part of the groupsaid it was no mean feat, “The  trek was a real challenge but it was great to see this part of the world and be away with such a  brilliant bunch of people who all had the same goals to trek across the Balkans and raise as much  as possible to get our Garden Accessibility project off the ground. I really can’t thank them enough  for all their efforts as this will make a real difference to the lives of those living at the Home.”

Jersey Cheshire Home is the only residential facility on the islandcaring solely for adults with disabilities.

The fundswill go towards the costs involved in creatinggreater access to the garden space at the  home; in turn this will increase social interaction amongst the residents, giving them more independence and helping them to connect with nature.
