Jersey Hospice Care is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, which marks the care provided to the first patient in May 1982. From 23 to 29 May, buildings in town, including Fort Regent and RBC at Gaspe House, will be lit up in Hospice blue to mark this important milestone for the charity and to pay tribute to the many thousands of Islanders and families supported over the years.
Throughout the past 40 years, Hospice has been dedicated to caring for people in our community with a life-limiting or life-threatening illness and extending this support to the people close to them. From visiting the first patients in their homes in 1982 to opening the 12 bedded In Patient Unit that we know today at Mont Cochon in 2012, the purpose of Jersey Hospice Care remains the same - that everyone deserves to be supported to live fully, in the time that they have left. This has been demonstrated time and time again by the many lives the charity has touched in our community since 1982.
The team at Hospice will be sharing key moments and memories from the past four decades and inviting Islanders to get involved throughout the year to celebrate. Here are some key moments for Jersey Hospice Care over the years:
1982 - The first Hospice patient was supported and a public meeting was held to recruit volunteers
1985 - Clarkson House, in Grouville, opened with day hospice facilities
1985 - The first inpatients were cared for in the two bedded Clarkson House
1986 - Bereavement support began to be offered, in addition to palliative care services
1995 - Clarkson House opened on Mont Cochon with a six bed In Patient Unit, Day Hospice and rooms for the Community Team, therapies and bereavement counselling
2010-12 - Redevelopment of Clarkson House (Mont Cochon) began to include an additional six rooms, making 12 in total
2013 - Formally opened the King Centre (named after Hospice founder, Jurat Mrs Jean King MBE) and new Day Hospice facilities
2014 - Opened up the remit of Jersey Hospice Care to care for adults with any life-limiting illness
2017 - Our Emotional Support service began to support children and young people with a lifelimiting condition and their families
2019 - Our outreach service for babies, children and young people with a life-limiting condition began
2022 - Jersey Hospice Care celebrates 40 years of supporting islanders to live life to the full
