Paros is the third largest island in the Cyclades, located in the centre of the Aegean.
It has a long and rich history which date back to the prehistoric times and continues until today.
Paros was at various times an important cultural commercial and financial center due to a large extent to its significant geographical location strategic importance and marble the famous Lychnitis.
Throughout the archaic period, Paros and the islands around it were distinguished as an innovative center of artistic production with the creation of exquisite statues of Parian marble that were exported every where in the Greek world.
The Parians wished to consolidate their presence in the central Aegean, possibly due to their rivalry with neighboring Naxos and the increasing domination of the Athenians, by establishing an extra urban sanctuary by the on the small neighbouring island of Despotiko.
However, despite its major size and wealth, it is not cited in any epigraphic or other literary source of antiquity.
