Carey Olsen has achieved more top tier rankings than any other Channel Islands law firm in the latest edition of Chambers Global, one of the world’s leading reference and ranking guides for the legal sector.

The law firm once again attained Band 1 status across the Channel Islands in corporate and finance (including investment funds), dispute resolution and trusts.

The guide highlighted Carey Olsen as ‘the leading firm for Guernsey trust work’ and noted its ability for both contentious and non-contentious trust matters and private wealth management. Partner and head of the department in Guernsey, Russell Clark, was hailed by clients as ‘the leading authority on trusts and foundations’ and partner Konrad Friedlander was also featured with a source saying ‘he is always considered in his advice and adds significant value to our deliberations’.

The corporate and finance team in Guernsey was described as ‘a leading light for Guernsey corporate and finance matters’ and commended for its work on behalf of Aviva, advising on its £5.6 billion acquisition of Friends Life Group.

The Jersey corporate team was highlighted for its ‘leading reputation for significant corporate matters, with considerable expertise in mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and IPOs’ and cited for its work with the Sanne Group in connection with its IPO and the placement of its shares on the main market of the LSE.

13 members of the Channel Islands corporate team were singled out as notable practitioners in the guide and praised for their wealth of experience, high level of client service and sound technical advice.

The Guernsey dispute resolution team was praised for its ‘market leading advice on trust, fraud and commercial disputes’ and commended for its representation of four BVI companies in Court of Appeal proceedings, following a £179 million judgement against former trustees of the Tchenguiz Discretionary Trust. Four lawyers were singled out as notable practitioners with managing partner John Greenfield being described by market commentators as ‘one of the most experienced litigation lawyers in Guernsey’.

In Jersey, the dispute resolution team was praised for its ‘formidable reputation for contentious trusts work, regularly acting for leading banks, financial institutions and individuals to assist with complex litigation’ with partners John Kelleher, Andreas Kistler and Nicolas Journeaux listed as notable practitioners.

Carey Olsen chairman, John Kelleher, said: “It is great to see Carey Olsen  maintaining top tier rankings across our practice areas in the Channel Islands. These rankings are the result of our practice teams' hard work and dedication throughout the year and are testament to the very strong offering we have across all our service lines.”
