A Charity is working to make it even easier for the public to anonymously report crime.

As a part of a new initiative Crimestoppers Jersey will be increasing the number of places that people will be able to see ways of making contact to report crimes.

The idea is to plaster the 0800 555111 freefone number and anonymous online form (https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/give-information-online/) as widely as possible so that Islanders can easily let the police know about wrongdoing.

The charity, which is now backed by new sponsor QI Finance, is working with others to increase awareness that people can play their part in protecting society by telling the police about unlawful acts without having to give any information about themselves.

Crimestoppers Jersey Chairman Peter Shirreffs said that the protection of anonymity is particularly important in a small community like Jersey.

‘Unlike many places in the UK where no one knows anyone, it is very difficult to remain anonymous here. As a result, it would be a surprise if people were not deterred from reporting crimes committed by people they may know in case there are repercussions.

‘However, by using our freefone number, which is answered in the UK, or by going on to the website, individuals can protect their identity and still pass on what might well be vital intelligence to the police,’ he said.

As part of the new higher visibility campaign, two Liberty Bus school buses now have the Crimestoppers number and logo emblazoned on the rear.

‘Lots of younger and older people use the buses and we would hope that this particular way of spreading the message will prompt people to report something they may have been holding on to.

‘We would really like to thank Liberty Bus for supporting this initiative and we are confident it will have a positive impact,’ said Mr Shirreffs.

The charity has produced stickers with the details of how to anonymously report crime and is looking for other organisations that want to support the initiative by displaying them to get in touch.

Other locations where there will be greater visibility of the Crimestoppers contact details in the days ahead include:-

Elizabeth Harbour,

Town car parks

Liberation Bus station

JEP advertising as part of Design an Ad activity

1,000 new stickers that will be placed around a variety of locations

Social media, including launch of Facebook page for Jersey Crimestoppers, to add to the @CrimestoppersJE Twitter account.

People are reminded to avoid using the 0800 551111 number in the case of a crime in progress or an urgent matter. In such circumstances, they should call 999 in an emergency or Police headquarters on 01534 612612.
