The recent CIPD Jersey Conference for leaders, managers and HR professionals brought together prominent speakers from the world of work and neuroscience. Called ‘THINK!’ the aim of the conference was to equip delegates to enhance their own and the performance of others at work through understanding and applying cutting-edge research about the brain.

Feedback from the delegates suggests that it achieved its objectives and more, with comments describing the conference as thought provoking, inspiring, beneficial, and practical.  Other comments included: “a great day, very enlightening and interesting”, “what a fantastic day, well planned and well delivered”, “good timing, I am looking at wellbeing in the workplace and what we can do for our employees,” and “I will be taking what I have learned today and will look at how I can put it into practice, a brilliant day!”.

In his presentation, keynote speaker, Professor Sir Cary L. Cooper said that ‘Employee wellbeing is not a nice to have, it’s a must to have.’  This was a recurring message as each speaker, focusing on resilience, mental health, mindfulness, managing addiction, and leadership, took to the stage.  The event also included a very moving interview of her own personal story of mental health despair and triumph with ITV News Presenter and MC for the day, Jess Dunsdon.

CIPD Jersey Chair, Cheryl Kaye commented:

"The event was a resounding success, with expert speakers delivering key messages for attendees to think and reflect on how they can enhance their own performance and that of others, in their personal and professional lives.

“The day certainly helped the attendees to recognise the impact their thoughts have on their behaviour, and how this affects others, along with practical tools and techniques to improve their own and the performance of their teams.

“As well as listening to our Keynote speaker and CIPD President, Sir Prof. L Cary Cooper on the impact of mental health on productivity, and the importance of employee wellbeing, it became clear that culture is all important, as is the need for business leaders and line managers to be socially skilled.

Richard Sheldon, Policy Advisor, CIPD Guernsey also shared some telling results of the recent Guernsey Mental Health Employer Survey, a survey which will shortly also be carried out by CIPD Jersey.

Mrs Kaye added: “Our neighbouring CIPD branch in Guernsey, in association with MIND Guernsey, recently conducted a survey on Mental Health at work, and Richard Sheldon, shared the results which have delivered valuable statistics to assist organisations drive change in the workplace.  As a result of the conference, CIPD Jersey will be launching its own local survey on Mental Health, and would like to invite Jersey employers to participate.  Please contact us at Jersey@cipdbranch.co.uk for further information."

THINK! was sponsored by Rossborough Healthcare and WellBeing World. Gecko Learning Solutions and BWI also supported the event.

Beverley Le Cuirot, Founder and Director of WellBeing World commented: “Hearing the validation for the importance of employee wellbeing from one of the most eminent speakers on the subject was important to me, as was seeing the reactions of the delegates.  It all helps to spread the word and to raise awareness for this essential business ‘must have’.”

Richard Clarke, Managing Director of Rossborough Heathcare added: “We’ve been delighted to continue our support of the CIPD Jersey Branch with this fantastic event. There was a great mix of both local and international speakers, all able to give their own expert insight into the world of positive health and wellbeing and the impact it can have on us both personally and at work. There was a definite buzz amongst those in attendance and great to see the CIPD shine a light on this hugely important topic.”
