On Wednesday 16 May, Jersey Post will release a set of six stamps and a Miniature Sheet commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Operation Chastise – a WWII mission that became more popularly known as The Dam Busters Raid
The six stamps tell the unfolding story of the mission whilst the Miniature Sheet features 24-year-old Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC, DSO and bar, DFC and bar, proudly standing at the head of his squadron whilst being presented to King George VI at Royal Air Force Scampton, Lincolnshire on 27 May 1943.
Chris Elligott, Philatelic Production Co-ordinator at Jersey Post explains: “The story of the raid was made into the famous British film The Dam Busters, released in 1955. It is through this film that many people are aware of the raid today and so the six stamps designed by Interabang represent the mission in a montage illustrative style, reminiscent of 1950s film posters. The stamps celebrate the 75thanniversary of this iconic mission and follow our recent issue marking the centenary of the RAF.”
Jersey Post’s The Dam Busters stamps will be available to buy from all branches of Jersey Post from 16 May 2018. Philatelic stamp products such as Miniature Sheets, First Day Covers and Presentation Packs will be available from the Jersey Post offices at Broad Street, St Helier and Rue Des Pres, St Saviour on issue day and can be ordered now at www.jerseystamps.comor by telephoning the Jersey Philatelic Bureau on: 00 44 (0)1534 516320.
