If you're stuck at home in lockdown, daydreaming of an adventure on the high seas, then don’t forget that you have until the end of this month to apply for the 2020 Jersey Clipper Bursary – a £1,000 cash award that could make your dream come true.
The bursary is designed to assist an Islander of any age to achieve a particular nautical ambition. This could be a trip on a tall ship, attending a training course, participation in a watersports competition or competing in an ocean race – anything with a maritime theme.
A legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round-the-World Race, the award was established in 2007 through the generosity of Dandara, Les Pas Holdings and UBS. Further funding to ensure the future of the award was provided by UBS, enabling the trustees to offer a main bursary of £1,000 and a runner’s-up award of £500.
The 2020 winner will follow in the wake of young Jersey surfer Will Masterman who used the award to attend the final event of the 2019 World Surf League European Pro Junior Tour, held in the Azores. The event was open only to the top 70 seeded junior competitors and Will finished in a very creditable 17th place against some extremely tough competition.
The 2019 runner's up award of £500 went to Charlie Cadin, a Laser sailor who used the funds to represent Jersey in the Island Games in Gibraltar.
If you would like to apply for the 2020 Jersey Clipper Bursary you will need to submit a written application by 30 April. It should be no more than 200 words in length and emailed to email@example.com.
