A ‘cabinet of curious comestibles’ has opened in Gorey. ‘The Works’ is a new Jersey pantry, bakery and creamery combined: the first of its kind in Jersey.
The new artisan business is housed at 2 Gorey Hill and is a member of the Feast family. It stocks an exceptional array of farmhouse cheeses, estate-bottled olive oils, salami, hand made pies, pates, smoked fish, cakes, coffee, tea and more.
The concept for thisquirky business has been lovingly created by owner Laurraine Falle, who intends to make the boutique shop a source of great food and great experiences. She has worked tirelessly to source local and European artisanal producers to supply the business with exceptional products. The pièce de résistance is the vintage style cheese safe from which unique cheese selections will be served; try Brie stuffed with truffles for something truly indulgent.
Product testing and the development of a special range of Feast and The Works ‘own brand’ items has been perfected by Executive Catering Manager Chef Paul North. He joins the Feast family after working for the prestigious Alison Price & Company - the leading London catering provider for heads of state and royalty. Paul will be assisted by talented Pastry Chef Aesun Aune.
Paul has worked closely with Mrs. Falle to produce a delicious range of Jersey butter and cream products inspired by the brand’s icon Royal Viscountess Togo – one of Jersey’s most prized cows. The Viscountess was bred by Mrs. Falle’s Father in Law, AW Falle, an acclaimed Jersey cattle breeder and judge. The cow was eventually shipped to ornament the herd of a great American cattle breeder but her memory remains caught in a painting by William Armitage, which hangs at the RJ&HS. That image will now become the recognised stamp of quality on The Works products.
A range of gluten free and sourdough breads and biscuits will be produced by hand. The bakers will be making, finishing and preparing some of the items in the window of the shop for all to see. Special dishes for customers to buy and take home for supper or a dinner party will soon be on offer. Artisan picnics will also be prepared using favourite Feast recipes and created fresh to order. The Works will also be the place to commission birthday, wedding and celebration cakes.
Laurraine Falle, Owner, The Works, says: 'I am proud and excited to launch The Works. For some time now my customers in Gorey have been asking for a delicatessen in the area and now we have delivered it, with much more to come. The Works is a wonderful cabinet of curious comestibles where people can socialise, enjoy our unique delicacies and learn about Jersey’s local producers. I am very happy to share some of our specialities with customers. There is a story behind everything selected and created, for example, olive oil has been sourced just for us from a Jersey lady who has her own olive grove in Crete. Our Coffee has been blended just for us and our local suppliers have been a fantastic support with fabulous seasonal produce for our range of jams and chutneys. We are also delighted to have collaborated with local artists and designers at The Observatory to create my very site specific packaging, the details that make the shop special, such as the hand made tiles by Potter Dave Brown and Bronze cast Croissant door Handles made by Pippa Barrows. Just to name a few who have helped create my lovely shop.
We will be supporting the campaign ‘Keep Jersey Farming’ by the use of the agricultural gifts from the surrounding parishes. We are in a particularly fortunate position to be able to showcase the wonderful produce from Jersey and beyond in a busy tourist area. We hope everyone embraces The Works and is inspired by these creations. We would love our local community to get involved and tell us about special items and products that they would like included in our selections.’
The Works will be open from 8am till 7pm, 7 days a week Visit: www.theworksjersey.com
