It's on again! Diabetes Jersey's 10th North-to-South Country Walk will take place on Sunday 29th August.

Diabetes Jersey’s popular North-to-South Country Walk, cancelled in 2020, takes place on Sunday 29 August this year. The event is the 10th organized by the charity and is held in memory of the late Brian le Marquand MBE under whose chairmanship the fundraiser was devised.  Since its first event, the walk has raised more than £90,000 for the charity.

The walk for much of its eight mile length is confined to lanes that cross the Island from north to south revealing, for many walkers, views of the Jersey countryside with which they will probably be unfamiliar. This year’s walk starts at the public car park on La Route du Nord, St John, (near Les Fontaines Inn) and concludes at that public car park by the radio tower at Corbière. This walk also features many public footpaths, particularly along Val de la Mare Reservoir and along the southern part of the Five Mile Road and around L’Oeillère headland. Because of the nature of these pathways, the route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

“The North-to-South is one of Diabetes Jersey’s most successful fundraisers and the last event attracted more than 500 walkers who took part and helped us raise more than £12,000,” says Diabetes Jersey’s chairman Bill O’Brien.  “This is the tenth anniversary of the North to South and we have varied the route once again since walkers tell us how much they enjoy the opportunity of seeing the beauty and diversity of the Island’s countryside rather than the usual familiarity of the walks around St Aubin’s Bay or along the railway track.  This year, although the route is much the same length as usual, we have included many more public footpaths and, strictly speaking, North to South has become North to South West!  Once again we have received excellent cooperation from all the parochial authorities and other bodies through whose parishes we pass.”

The route finishes near Corbière Phare restaurant and any potential walkers who might care to take advantage of this proximity should book their tables very early since the walk is taking place on the late August Bank Holiday weekend

For the convenience of walkers, free coaches will be provided that start from St Helier and also return from Corbière to the start. The registration fee in advance is £10 (which includes a free commemorative baseball cap) although anyone joining in on the day can do so for a donation of £25.
