As part of this year’s Skipton Art Series, Jersey Arts Trust created a central commissioning pot for visual arts projects in 2017 around creating new work and engaging the community.

On Sunday 28th  May, Sam Carney will be offering a Sketch Walk workshop with Jersey Blue Badge Guide Sue Hardy for an afternoon walking and drawing around Jersey’s beautiful St Brelade's Bay. Starting from St Brelade's Church Hall, participants will walk through the grounds of the church to the beaches, promenades, parks and beyond making quick and spontaneous sketches informed by the scenery, architecture and people along the way.

Whether you are a complete beginner wanting to enjoy the amazing Jersey coast through your artist’s eye, or a more experienced artist looking to shake up your usual drawing practice, this will be a fun and informative experience. From Monday 19th June – Friday 30th June, all drawings created during the workshop will be featured as part of a documentary exhibition at Jersey Jersey Heritage's Link Gallery. All the drawing materials needed for the workshop will be provided - just bring an open mind and your walking shoes!

Participants should meet at the front of the St Brelade's Church Hall at 1:30pm for a 2pm start. There are 20 tickets available at just £10 each, payable on the day. All you need to do is e-mail Sam at: samcarneyillustration@gmail.com to book your spot and avoid disappointment.

Alice Bravery, Producer at Jersey Arts Trust, said: “It’s fantastic to be supporting a project that aims to make the act of drawing enjoyable and accessible to all, and makes the most of our island’s stunning natural scenery. I’ve no doubt that participants will come away from the workshop feeling like they have acquired a new appreciation of Jersey’s stunning landscape through the act of sketching, whilst having a lot of fun in the process.”

Lorraine McLean, Mortgage Sales Manager, Skipton International, said: “The Sketch Walk is one of the first in a line of Skipton Art Series projects planned for this summer. Each of the projects, which have been commissioned as part of the Skipton Arts Series, open up the arts in different ways to the community in Jersey. There really will be something for everyone!”

Skipton Art Series so far

The Skipton Art Series was formed in 2015 as a new umbrella term that encompasses the Skipton Open Studios as well as other community arts events. The 2015 programme included the Les P’tits Faîtchieaux project, where schools, community groups and the general public made thousands of small clay figures, which were then distributed to countries all around the world. The Skipton Art Series for 2015 was rounded up with the incredibly popular Jersey Projection Gallery, which saw some of Jersey’s most important work be shown together, for the first time, on the façade of Normans Commercial Buildings.
