Transport and Technical Services would like to encourage more drivers to use South Hill as an alternative to the tunnel when travelling after 9.30am towards the east. This South Hill route is available from 9.30am until 7am the following morning every weekday and throughout the weekend, while Mount Bingham remains closed for essential rock stabilisation work.

This provides an alternative route for traffic heading from The Esplanade to La Route du Fort, Mont Millais and Greve d’Azette. Traffic observations have shown that, particularly from mid-afternoon onwards, a long queue of eastbound traffic forms from the Esplanade for the tunnel. Many of these drivers are heading for Mont Millais and the east. Their journey time would be reduced if they were to use the Commercial Buildings road, South Hill, Green Street (and after 3pm Havre des Pas). This route bypasses the queue for the tunnel and is relatively lightly trafficked all day.

Between 7am and 9.30 am on weekday mornings, the traffic flow is reversed and the route is open to cars heading west. This route is now very well used by over 700 motorists.
