Winner of the 2014 Jersey Triathlon, Guernsey’s James Travers will have local backing when he returns to Jersey for the 2015 Natwest Island Games.
Jersey-based pension consultant First Actuary has announced sponsorship of Guernsey’s rising star in his first Island Games. First Actuary has already been announced as the main team sponsor for the ten-person Jersey Triathlon team for the 2015 Games.
Travers qualified for the Guernsey team by winning the Jersey Triathlon, over the same course as this summer’s Games, ahead of Jersey’s Commonwealth Games competitor Tom Perchard. Having only started racing triathlons in 2013 Travers was too late to be considered for Guernsey’s Commonwealth Games team in Glasgow but competing at the Gold Coast in 2018 is a realistic prospect. Travers was recently recognized in the annual Guernsey Sports Commission awards where he won the Sir John Loveridge Trophy, awarded to the athlete deemed to have made the greatest progress during 2014.
Managing Director of First Actuary David Holmes, whose own personal links with Guernsey Triathlon led to the deal, was pleased to be able to support another up and coming Channel Islands athlete. “James has shown a phenomenal rate of improvement in his first two years as a triathlete and I am delighted that we are able to help as he looks to build on his early success. We look forward to seeing James fight for a podium spot against the First Actuary Jersey team at his first Island Games here in Jersey.”
The Island Games triathlon takes place on the opening weekend of the Games and consists of a continuous race starting with a 1500m swim in St Aubin’s bay followed by a 40 km cycle, starting and finishing at Jardins de la Mare, and a final 10 km run.
