On Sunday 20 February, members of Girlguiding Jersey gathered together to celebrate World Thinking Day at Maufant Youth Club. The gathering of 90 girls and 22 leaders marks the first time that all the different sections of Girlguiding Jersey (Brownies, Rainbows and Guides) have come together since the first case of COVID-19 in Jersey.

Marked on 22 February every year, World Thinking Day is a global celebration of the 10 million girls worldwide whoare members of Girlguiding. It has been celebrated globally since 1926, and is an opportunity for girls to learn more about the wider world, and the global challenges we face.

To celebrate, the girls took part in a range of global-themed food challenges. This included baking ANZAC biscuits, crafting pizzas out of beads, and exploring Arabic pottery by making their own pots.

The girls also renewed their Promise, which is a common commitment shared by all members of Girlguiding.

Helen Barette, Island Commissioner, said: “I’m so pleased we were able to celebrate World Thinking Day togetherthis year. When we first started planning the event in January, COVID restrictions meant that we weren’t sure we’d be able to meet in person.

“The event has been a fantastic success. World Thinking Day gives the girls a chance to get together and try new things, but coming together reminds us that we’re part of a bigger community, not just on-Island, but around the world.

“All the things we do in Guiding - helping girls develop new skills, make friends, and grow their confidence - they’reall things that have been made harder by COVID. Even though lots of Units carried on meeting online, nothing can replace the buzz and fun of meeting in person, as a big group.

“I’d like to thank all our fantastic leaders who made today possible. Delivering an event of this size is really a teameffort.”
