There is a rare opportunity to hear from Standard Bank’s Chief Economist and Head of Research, Goolam Ballim who is coming to Jersey to present a seminar on Thursday 3rd October.

Goolam heads up a team of 72 analysts and has been recognised as producing leading economic research on Africa. He is a past winner of South Africa’s top economist award and adviser to the country’s Minister of Economic Development and other public sector officials.

During the seminar, Goolam will analyse the state of major developed and emerging economies of the world and their monetary policies.  He will be focusing on the world’s fastest growing region – Africa, and assessing risks, regulatory developments and opportunities across the continent.  Goolam is looking forward to his visit and to sharing the team’s research: ‘Global economic conditions have remained daunting since 2009, and recovery has been tepid in most places.  While Europe offers only pockets of optimism, Asia’s economy has lost discernible momentum.  It has thus been left to the US to export some vibrancy to the world, and this just may happen!  At the same time, Africa is garnering the world’s attention, with trade and capital inflows gushing.  There are several structural forces that are likely to secure Africa’s ascendency, including strong population growth, rapid urbanization, and financially-empowered consumers. But there are also risks and some of them unique.’

Mark Hucker, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Bank Jersey, said this is a rare chance to hear first hand from a top regionally-focused economist: ‘It is not often economists of Goolam’s stature are able to visit the island and share their research.  Goolam not only advises members of South Africa’s government and officials, but also has extensive relations with the private sector.  His visit is very timely given the island’s decision to look towards Africa as a source of new business and opportunites.’

The seminar is being held on Thursday 3rd October at 8.30am in the Liberation Suite of the Pomme d’Or. Anyone interested in attending should contact Yvette.atkinson@standardbank.com  or call: 01534 881112.
