The Health and Safety Inspectorate Annual report for 2012 has now been published.
The report summarises the work carried out by the Inspectorate in 2012 and provides information, sourced from claims made for Social Security benefit during 2012, on work related accidents and ill health.
Colin Myers, Director of Health and Safety, said “Health and safety is a serious business. In 2012, although there was a small reduction in the total number of reported work related accidents and ill health, the impact on individuals continued to provide serious concerns. Reports of persons being needlessly exposed to asbestos is also of great concern. Asbestos is a killer with, in 2010, over 4,500 deaths in the UK attributed to past exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is present in many workplaces in Jersey due to its wide use in the past as construction materials and many other products. It therefore seems to me that there is still much to be done in order to manage health and safety at work with employers and others with responsibilities for health and safety at work having a key part to play”.
