Incinerator Bottom Ash soon for export

The Minister for Transport and Technical Services, Deputy Kevin Lewis will soon be fulfilling his promise and exporting incinerator bottom ash (IBA) off Island as well as air pollution control residue (APCr).

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is going out to tender for the off Island treatment and recovery / recycling of Jersey’s IBA. As there is no on-Island capability to do this work at present the contract will not be advertised locally. However, there is an opportunity for local companies to tender for the haulage of the IBA.

TTS is seeking Expressions of Interest from contractors able to haul approximately 15,000 tonnes of IBA from La Collette to specified outlets within the European Union. Those interested in the work should find out more on the Channel Islands Procurement Portal www.tenders.gov.je where they can register their interest. Tender documents will be issued in November to those who have registered an interest.

In September TTS started the tender process for the export of APCr, this is now well underway. It is expected that by the early part of next year, Jersey will be exporting both IBA and APCr, thereby reducing the harmful elements stored in the ground at La Collette.

The Minister for TTS said: “When I became Minister I said I did not want to leave this material at La Collette as a legacy for future generations. I am really pleased that I have been able to fulfil my promise and that we will soon be exporting this material for recovery or recycling.”
