There’s usually a lot that happens in Jersey on the longest weekend of the Summer, when there are more daylight hours than at any other time of the year.  But this year, for the first time in over 10 years, there will be some ‘spooky’ kind of fun going on.

Mont Orgueil and Elizabeth Castles are playing host to two brave groups of intrepid ‘ghost hunters’ who will be searching for paranormal activity in the medieval turrets and cloisters - and all in the name of charity!

The Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan have teamed up with P.I.G.S. (the Paranormal Intelligence Gathering Service) to bring two nights of ‘ghost hunting’ to the castles. Anthony Nolan and P.I.G.S. have been working together for many years; since P.I.G.S. (which formed in 2006) started undertaking large scale events.  As well as working with the Charity in the UK, the group have visited Jersey twice and have also worked in Guernsey.

Each night (on Friday at Mont Orgueil and Saturday at Elizabeth), the 40 ghost hunters will be split into small teams and head off into the castle grounds. The teams will conduct experiments using a number of techniques including thermal imaging cameras and a structured light camera which maps the environment and is often said to discover ‘ghosts’ in the process. Along with this they will be using a genuine ‘Franks Box’ one of only four in the UK - which is a rare device that uses white noise frequencies to search for any electronic voice phenomena. The teams then regroup and analyse their findings.

Founding member and Team leader of P.I.G.S. Tim Brown, said:

“We are delighted to be coming back to Jersey. As well as the warm welcome we receive from both the Jersey Friends and our guests, Elizabeth and Mont Orgueil Castles are so unique that they offer all kinds of interesting opportunities for our ghost hunters.

We are also supporting the vital work of this Charity, which has been close to our hearts for so many years.  The idea of the events is not to terrify people in any way – it’s a lot of fun with a definite ‘edge’!”

This weekend is an important fundraising initiative for the Jersey Friends, who continue to strive to raise awareness of the fight against blood cancers, encourage people to join the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell Register, and also support the Charity in its search for donor ‘matches’, which can mean saving lives.

Andrew Le Brun of the Jersey Friends, said:

“This is our largest event since the pandemic, and we are delighted once again to have teamed up with the P.I.G.S.  We are welcoming people who live on Island and others who have come to Jersey just for the events. Our partner ROK Construct, who are the Jersey Friends’ champions in the Island, as well as putting their own team in, will be providing a huge amount of support for us over the weekend and we are very grateful to them for that.”

Louise Minier of Rok Construct added:

Rok is very proud to be sponsoring this event for the Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan.  We work hard to support local charities and have a very special relationship with the Jersey Friends, having supported them with a variety of activities over the past few years.  We are particularly excited to be supporting the P.I.G.S. event, as it is something so unique and unusual and very different from our normal charitable activities.

“There seems to be an increase in blood cancers, leukaemia and blood disorders, with some of our staff being personally affected, which is why we are supporting Anthony Nolan this year through fundraising, sponsorship and helping with their recruitment drive for their register of potential blood stem cells or bone marrow donors.  We hope that the event is a huge success.”
