‘Don’t try to be like Sue, you are you!’

JCG’s prize giving took place on Friday 13th September and welcomed Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE, Captain of the 2016 Olympic Gold winning GB hockey team. She was capped a record 375 times for her country and was the England and Great Britain Captain for 13 years.

On Friday morning, Kate worked with JCG’s sportswomen and trained the 1st XI hockey team. JCG’s Head of PE, Zoe Mountford commented:

Kate Richardson-Walsh is definitely a huge role model for women in many aspects of her life. She certainly left me with goosebumps talking about how she reached her goals ... to be knocked back, then get up and strive to be the best version of yourself is a lesson we can all learn from. Don’t let others dictate your dreams, go out and get them for yourself. Kate worked with our 1st XI Hockey team and the students thought it was great. She used and built up some drills that they could take away and use in their own training sessions too. The students will continue to benefit from this experience and hopefully be inspired by Kate’s journey.

Carl Howarth, Principal, congratulated the College on the achievements of the year and expressed his thanks:

The first thing I want to say is thank you.  Thank you for everything you accomplish, you achieve and especially for everything you are.  I am incredibly proud of all of you.  So many of you refer to JCG as your second family; this is the place where you can be yourself, where you can thrive and where you know you are deeply cared for. The second thing is to celebrate the innovations this past year.  We continue to embrace our failures, build on our successes and strengths and in doing so we realise we can achieve so much more.

Before presenting the awards for the year, Kate Richardson-Walsh described her journey to success and encouraged students to have a vision, be strong and, above all, to be themselves. She explained what she had learnt in her role as Captain of the Olympic Gold Medal GB Hockey Team, saying that, as she was unsure what to say and do; she had just decided to copy the former Captain and her role model, Sue. When this did not work for her, she realised she could not be Sue; she had to be her authentic self. She urged all present to be themselves and not to try ‘being like Sue’.

Issy, one of JCG’s 1st XI hockey players was grateful for the session:

It was an honour to meet Kate Richardson-Walsh who inspired us with her speech and I was very fortunate to take part in a training session. She’s a great role model for many hockey players and motivates many people to reach their goals.
