A group of Jersey student nurses have commenced a new training programme for local nurses at the General Hospital.

The Pre-registration Nursing Programme in the adult field of nursing is provided on the Island by the University of Chester and has received a ringing endorsement from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The group of 15 students are set to complete a two-week induction programme on Friday 4 October, after which they will move on to the next stage of their training.

The NMC, which is the nursing and midwifery regulator for the UK and Channel Islands, carried out a validation event in May 2013 for various courses. Endorsement for all the courses, including several at degree level, included commendations in three areas from the NMC inspectors. The visitors were impressed with the enthusiasm, passion and commitment of those they met, the quality and high standards of mentorship practices across Health and Social Services, and the integration of educational provision, healthcare and government partners.

“We were very pleased to get the NMC’s go-ahead for the programmes we will be offering to Jersey students through our partnership with the University of Chester,” stated Julie Mesny, Head of Nursing & Midwifery Education. “It was especially gratifying to get the commendations that we did, which bode very well for the standard of education that students will receive.”

The Minister for Health and Social Security, Deputy Anne Pryke, spoke to the group in their first week of induction.

“I’m delighted to see a new group of nurses join us and commence their training,” she said. “As a former nurse I remember my first few days in the job and can share the excitement of our new recruits – they have a wonderful career ahead of them caring for patients in Jersey.”

The next Adult pre-registration nursing programme is due to commence in September 2014; the education department at the General Hospital will be holding ‘open events’ in January 2014.
