The Jersey Round Island Challenge, taking place on Saturday 12th August 2017 is attracting attention from overseas competitors and has recently received confirmation that a world record holder is joining the line-up.
Joanne Hamilton-Vale, experienced Stand Up Paddler (SUP) and Founder of UK SUP, a non-profit organisation that manages the UK National Race Series, has registered for the solo SUP challenge. She recently broke the world record for distance paddled in 24 hours completing 179.99km. The successful Guinness Book of World Records attempt was held at the Grand Union Canal, Northamptonshire on 2nd April and beat both the previous male and female record.
Having survived breast cancer twice herself, Joanne who is Global Ambassador for cancer charity ‘Stand up for the Cure’ is always focussed on raising funds and awareness for charities and will be a welcome addition to the event which sees people of all abilities competing to benefit local charity, the Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation (GCFSF). Joanne states ‘she has some great friends in Jersey who told (her) how good and worthwhile the event is.’
In 2017, funds raised by the event hopes to total in excess of £30,000 which would then fund a collaboration between the GCFSF, other charities and Andium Homes to provide flexible UK accommodation for Jersey families whose children need specialist treatment. The 2016 Jersey Round Island Challenge grabbed the attention of national media and was even listed by Red Bull as one of their top 11 UK Extreme Challenges. Each discipline circumnavigates the island in relay or solo format with the support and guidance of island clubs and a central professional events organiser, 3D Events. The event centres around coastal and water based sports, and disciplines include swim, run, stand-up paddle, row and kayak.
The Jersey Round Island Challenge could not happen without the continued support of local organisations. Headline sponsors Smith & Williamson return to support the event in 2017 with additional support from Dickinson Gleeson.
Local clubs and boating organisations are again on hand to support and guide anyone brave enough to take on an exceptional challenge that is open to all levels of ability. These include:
Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club
Jersey Rowing Club
Jersey Paddle Club
Jersey Canoe Club
Jersey Wet Wheels
Jersey Aquatic Rescue Club
Le Mourier Charters
The Jersey Round Island Challenge will be represented by the Clubs and their members at this weeks Jersey Boat Show and look forward to seeing you there.
