Jersey Sings saw Fort Regent turned into a mini arena with 1,400 children and participants, and 29 primary and secondary schools taking part in a singing extravaganza celebrating a year long educational project. Put on by Jersey charity Music in Action in partnership with the Jersey Music Service the children sang a mix of old classics, modern songs. In this Armistice Year the children performed a World War One melody and a special song of remembrance called ‘We Will Remember them’.

Joining the Jersey Sings choir was internationally renowned conductor David Lawrence, the Jersey Sings Rock Band who hold the Guinness book of world record for most gigs at the O2 arena in London, acclaimed soloists Ebony Buckle, and Tom Billington and local Jersey soloist Maisie Robertson.  From the ever popular Power in Me, Jambo Bwana in Swahili and a host of classics the children learnt by memory 3000 words, complex harmonies and a number of dance moves enabling them to develop their confidence as well as having wider educational benefits.

Sandy Moretta, Director of Music in Action stated “This project offers the young performers the opportunity to develop essential life skills such as team work and communication. We are so grateful for the commitment and enthusiasm of the schools and teachers in helping us to put on Jersey Sings. It was a truly special day for all.”

The two evenings were possible through the support of Music in Action’s employability sponsor Barclay’s and the education sponsor Ogier. Kate Kirk, Head of Marketing at Ogier saying “Education is at the core of our Corporate Social Responsibility programme and we are very pleased to be able to support an initiative that educates so many children not only musically but in a range of skills which will be important throughout their lives.”

Rebecca Lawrence, the 2017 Jersey Teacher of the Year who composed Power in Me and is the music teacher at Samares and Janvrin schools stated that “David, the band and the soloists made the day so fun for the children. They gave it their all and the music is going to still go around in my head for a long time.”

The children were blown away by the event. One child from Janvrin school stated that the event was “literally the best day of my life” while a second said it made her “feel prouderful” This was a wonderful event for the children of Jersey to be able to take part in.

The Jersey Sings teams are now starting preparations for Jersey Sings 2019!
