Islanders are invited to take on a new, long-distance walking event that aims to match the distance a Jersey Hospice Care Nurse walks during a typical working week within the In Patient Unit – over 54 miles. The Nine by Five Challenge is island-wide but split over two days: ‘The East’ on Saturday 30 April and ‘The West’ on Sunday 1 May, with both routes close to 40k long and starting at the heart of the challenge, Jersey Hospice Care.

The team at Jersey Hospice Care are grateful to Harvey Mitchell for supporting the Challenge. Mitchell Building Contractors are a long-term supporter of the charity, who’s commitment will continue to make a difference to the patients cared for at Hospice.

Harvey Mitchell, Managing Director of Mitchell Building Contractors, said: “The Nine by Five Challenge is set to be a great event for families, friends or colleagues to take part in while raising important funds to help people in our community with a life-limiting illness. We are really looking forward to being involved. Over 54 miles in two days is an impressive challenge and I encourage Islanders to sponsor what they can to those taking part – every penny will help patients to receive the best possible care.”

Nine by Five Challenge details

On both days, the walk will begin at 0830 from Jersey Hospice Care, Mont Cochon heading north towards the cliff paths. From here the route heads east on day one and west on day two before looping back to Hospice to finish.

A walk pack will be sent out to all participants ahead of the Challenge with more details about the weekend, including locations of the food and drink stations, parking, where and how family and friends can support and most importantly the final maps. The Nine by Five Challenge is suitable for a wide range of fitness levels, ages, and experience in walking, and there is also the option to take on either of the single day events too.

Registration for the full two day Nine by Five Challenge is £40 per person (£30 for one day) and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £60 through sponsorship in aid of Jersey Hospice Care. Visit ninebyfive.eventbrite.co.uk for more information or to sign up. Registration closes at midnight on Wednesday 27 May.
