Throughout Learning Disability week, charity Les Amis is taking to the streets to raise awareness, and funds, for the Island’s first elderly and complex needs nursing care unit for Islanders with learning disabilities.

Les Amis Flag Week is running from Monday 19th – Friday 23rd June. Les Amis staff, residents and members of staff from corporate sponsor ZEDRA, have been in town between 11am – 2pm raising awareness about the charity.

After the first two days in Brook Street, Les Amis raised £1,290.00 through public donations.

Lauren Carré, Fundraising, PR and Marketing Manger, said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported our flag week so far. Dementia is an international issue. But, Les Amis residents, people with learning disabilities are five times more likely to develop dementia. At the moment, when our residents reach old age and require a registered nurse they are moved into States’ care. By building Evelina Court, we can continue to look after our residents even in old age when they are at their most vulnerable. In turn, this will also relieve some of the pressure off the States’ care services.”

“Holding a flag week is great fun because we get to talk to Islanders who may not have heard about Les Amis before. Organisations spend so much time bombarding the public with information online so it’s great to be in town actually talking with people. We’ve set ourselves a large fundraising target so it is really important we communicate with Islanders why we need to raise this money.”

Les Amis has committed to raise £500,000 for Evelina court. The Association of Jersey Charities grant scheme has conditionally donated Les Amis £30,000 as long as Les Amis raise the £500,000. This conditional donation brings the fundraising total to just under £50,000.

On Friday Les Amis staff and residents will be joined by corporate partner ZEDRA, who will be selling flapjacks in Brook Street. ZEDRA staff will then join Les Amis on a pub run from 5:30pm onwards.

Les Amis invites anyone who has questions about the charity or Evelina Court to find them in town where staff and residents will answer their questions.
