On Friday 11th March, the staff and residents of Les Hoûmets Care Home in Gorey, Jersey, showed their support for the people of Ukraine by hosting a “Ukrainian Day”.
The chefs prepared a very special lunch based on Ukrainian food and drink. The residents were offered Ukrainian mulled wine, plus beers, other traditional drinks, including non-alcoholic options. In the afternoon Ukrainian High Tea was served along with traditional Ukrainian desserts. The rest of the day was based around Ukrainian music, history, games and culture.
A raffle open to staff, residents and families raised over £400 in valuable funds for those in need, the proceeds of which were donated to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. Prizes were donated by people and businesses within the local community.
James Sergeant Activities co-ordinator at the home said “ It was a very special and emotional day, residents, staff and families were keen to show support for the people of Ukraine by raising money but also learning more about the people, culture and history of the nation”.
Lucie Filipponi Director of Les Hoûmets said “ It has been heartbreaking to see the war in Ukraine and it has been especially sad to see the elderly people struggling at such a difficult time. As a care home we wanted to do what we could to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people.”
