The Lions Club of Jersey is urging Jersey’s children’s charities to apply for a chance to be chosen as a beneficiary of this year’s Swimarathon. The deadline for submissions is Friday 31 January 2014. Oakwell Children’s Respite Centre has been selected as the main beneficiary of the funds raised by participants in the event. In addition to this another 25 Jersey-based children’s charities will receive a share of at least £25,000.
Lions Club of Jersey President Chris Clarke says: 'We are delighted to be able to make this commitment to Oakwell whilst also offering a further 25 Jersey children’s charities the opportunity to benefit from the incredible fundraising of the Swimarathon participants. Once again the response has been excellent with beneficiary applications coming in from the day we launched. However, we still have room for more and look forward to completing the full requirement by the deadline of the end of January.’
One charity that has already been confirmed as a beneficiary is Girlguiding Jersey. Brownies, celebrating their centenary this year, offers girls a head start in life encouraging them to be happy, self-confident and curious about the world in which they live. Through regular meetings, special events, day trips, sleepovers, camps and holidays Brownies learn new hobbies, explore other cultures and the outdoors. The charity opens up a world of exciting challenges to girls between the ages of seven and ten, and offers the opportunity to try new things, learn vital life skills and to make great friendships whilst always having fun.
Commenting on their successful application, Helen Barette of Girlguiding Jersey said: ‘In such an important year for the Brownies in Jersey this support from the Lions Club means a great deal to us. We are planning a very special year for our 14 Brownie groups that will reinforce the value and relevance of the Girlguiding movement in Jersey, and hopefully encourage more girls and adults to join us’.

It has been our pleasure to support the fundraising goals of the Swimarathon over the past seven years, and we encourage more charities to come forward as we build up to this exciting community event.
