Logicalis is to mark Data Privacy Day (28 January 2018) with a new guide helping individuals and organisations in the Channel Islands understand data privacy.

With just over 100 days until European General Data Protection Regulations (EU GDPR) come into place, data privacy is one of the biggest issues affecting everyone in our Islands.

Data privacy, or data protection encompasses data storage, processing, and security, with obligations for everyone who deals with personal data. Logicalis’s guide explains those responsibilities along with tips for individuals to help protect their own data.

Tom Bale, Business Development and Technical Director, Logicalis, said: “Data privacy is a huge issue for everyone in the Channel Islands at the moment with organisations looking at ways to comply with EU GDPR regulations. However, Data Privacy Day is a good reminder of what is at the heart of GDPR: protecting the rights of individuals.

“With more detailed information about who we are, and what we do, being collected and stored online, it’s increasingly important for people to think about what information is being collected, what organisations are using it for, and how well they are looking after it.”

Data Protection Day was set up by the Council of Europe in 2006 to raise awareness about the rights to personal data protection and privacy. EU GDPR will take effect 25 May 2018.

Tom said: “Security is at the heart of data privacy. People have seen increasing evidence of lax security in companies leading to huge breaches of sensitive personal data, such as with the Equifax breach last year. During this, hackers accessed names and addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, and even driver license numbers, exposing over 145 million people to identity theft.

“When so many cyber-attacks and data breaches can be prevented though better security procedures, and detected at much earlier stages by proper monitoring if things do go wrong, it is in everyone’s interests to take data privacy more seriously.”

Logicalis is one of the Channel Islands’ largest providers of managed IT services and security solutions, offering clients a comprehensive service managing, maintaining, and monitoring IT systems, data, and security.
