A new director for the Education, Sport and Culture Department has been appointed.

Justin Donovan will take up his new role in May prior to the retirement in August of the current director, Mario Lundy.

Mr Donovan is currently Director of Education at Hertfordshire County Council and has also held senior local government roles in the UK, including at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Mr Donovan also served as Head of Faculty in the London Borough of Richmond.

Mr Donovan, who is married with four adult children, said: “I am looking forward to joining the island’s community and to taking up such an exciting role. I have already been made to feel very welcome by everyone that I have met. I will do all I can to continue the good work of the department of Education, Sport and Culture and to ensure that services continue to improve.”

His key achievements include leading the creation of UK vocational programmes which significantly raised attainment levels and, in previous roles, his intervention has contributed towards a significant raise in school standards across all age ranges.

States Chief Executive John Richardson said that Mr Donovan’s experience and expertise would help the Education, Sport and Culture Department to continue to develop to meet future challenges. “We look forward to welcoming Justin to the Island in May and helping him settle into Education and build on the excellent work being done by Mario Lundy and all his team,” said Mr Richardson.
