The latest Ports of Jersey Officer Cadet has passed his Officer of the Watch Orals, an achievement which qualifies 23-year-old Julian Hart to work on ships of unlimited size, at an unlimited distance from the coast. He is now on his way to the next stage of his career as a Deck Officer of the Watch.

Julian has been working at Ports of Jersey as a Watch Officer in Jersey Coastguard and VTS since last year and will be leaving to go to sea in September.

Local students are supported through a three-year Officer Cadetship training programmewith combined sponsorship from both Ports of Jersey and the maritime charity, Trinity House. Becoming a Deck Officer of the Watch allows talented local cadets to embark on a career with the Merchant Navy, or in the offshore oil and gas, superyacht and marine renewable sectors.

Julian said: “I have had so much support since I first came to Ports of Jersey for work experience in November 2016, and particularly over the last four years of my cadetship. I am really grateful for the help and guidance from all at Ports of Jersey, which has allowed me to complete my cadetship. It wouldn’t have been possible without it.

And thank you to the team in the Maritime Operations Centre for welcoming me to a month of sea-time with them in 2020, and more recently while I’ve been working with them.”

Ports of Jersey is also sponsoring Ben van Eijden, who is almost at the end of his first year and is currently at sea. Ben contacted Ports of Jersey from the Gulf of Aden, and said: “I have been at sea on Al Areesh, an LNG tanker for almost 2 months now. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself and learned so much. From coming on to the bridge and being totally clueless to now operating and being confident with the bridge equipment.

The crew have been great and always happy to teach me anything. I really feel like I am part of a family onboard and I am falling in love with the job, even though I have a way to go. I am growing in so many ways. Thank you so much for this opportunity.”

Ports of Jersey HR Manager,Ellie Cousins, said: Officer Cadetship sponsorship comes at a cost to Ports of Jerseybutwe are committedto opening up maritime careersfor Islanders, who are not eligible for funding from the UK governmentWe forge stronglong-term relationship with our cadets as they head out to sea, and we look forward to welcoming them back to Jersey if their careers bring them home.

Nick Reddy, a Marine Leisure Seasonal who has worked for us for a couple of years, will be starting his cadetship in September 2024 and we look forward to seeing him progress in his career with us.”

Harbour Master, Captain Bill Sadler, said: “I’m immensely proud of the cadets we have supported through their initial training. Their approach to the work has been exemplary and they are great ambassadors for Ports of Jersey and Trinity House.”
