The residents at Jersey Cheshire Home are challenging themselves to help clock up 40km to celebrate the Home’s big 40th birthday.

Using specialist equipment, the staff plan to get as many residents as possible physically walking a few kilometres up the road outside the Home on Wednesday 12th April.

They’ll be helped along by the Home Manager and physiotherapist Steve Martin and Jeff Ferguson, the Occupational Therapist, who themselves plan to walk for around 10 hours to complete the distance.

Donna Abel, CEO Jersey Cheshire Home said, “We are really excited to be celebrating our 40th anniversary this year and are thrilled that everyone is getting involved in this collective challenge. It’s no mean feat walking 40km but I have every faith that our brilliant residents and Jersey Cheshire Home team can do it!”

The big walk is expected to finish around 5pm after which the residents and staff will be off to celebrate with a little party back at the Home.

The residents’ challenge coincides with the Home’s Step Into Spring challenge which is open to everyone, both individuals and teams and challenges people to cover 40 miles between 20th March and 21st June any way they want – walking, running, cycling, swimming or wheeling. With 40 being the magic number this year, entrants are asked to raise a minimum of £40, £1 for every mile.

Jersey Cheshire Home is the only residential facility on the island caring solely for adults with disabilities. It costs just over £3 million per year to run, just over £8,300 a day.
