The Jersey Community Relations Trust is pleased to host a Breakfast Seminar: “Advancing Women in Politics & Public Life” on the 17th October 2013 at The Grand Jersey Hotel.
In Jersey, as in the rest of the world, women are largely underrepresented in the political arena and other spheres of public life. The representation of women in the States Assembly is unacceptably low at 23% and while Jersey has a high rate of female participation in paid employment, women make up only a third of managers, directors and senior officials.
Supported by EY, this Breakfast Seminar is an opportunity to discuss the persistent underrepresentation of women in decision-making and hopes to provide direction for individuals, businesses, charities and the States of Jersey that will help them bring this situation to an end.
Dr. Elena Moran, chair of the JCRT said “As part of our work to promote equality, the Trust released the first ever report examining the status of women in Jersey. One of the issues highlighted by the report is the low representation of women in the States Assembly as well as in senior positions across all sectors. Our objective for this Breakfast Seminar is to highlight that underrepresentation and explore current thinking on achieving a more equitable result in all spheres of working. We are especially delighted to have secured Dame Tessa Jowell as our keynote speaker for the event; someone who has been at the forefront of equality issues for much of her working life.”

The Breakfast Seminar will feature opening remarks by Senator Sir Philip Bailhache, Assistant Chief Minister with responsibility for foreign affairs and Former Bailiff of Jersey.
The keynote address will be delivered by The Right Hon Dame Tessa Jowell, MP for Dulwich, who has a wealth of political experience to share. In 2002, Tessa was elected as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and consequently was in charge of London’s successful Olympic bid.
