Seeking sponsorship for a first for Jersey publication

MEDIA RELEASE: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and not Bailiwick Express, and the text is reproduced exactly as supplied to us

To celebrate 70 years as a Club supporting women and girls locally, nationally and internationally Soroptimist International Jersey commissioned local author, Penny Byrne to write ‘Inspiring Women of Jersey’.

There has never been a publication solely dedicated to the incredible achievements of women connected to our Island. The book, illustrated by forty local art students, will celebrate sixteen ‘main’ women no longer with us including Louisa Gould, Caroline Trachy, Frances Le Sueur and Dot Macready. Eighteen more women will be represented on a ‘wonderwall’, superbly illustrated by art student Keira Melville with details about their achievements.

The Club would like all the proceeds from the sale of the book to support the incredible work helping women and young people of our two chosen charities, Jersey Women’s Refuge and Brightly.

We are very excited about the launch of the book which will coincide with the  opening of the exhibition of the student’s artwork in the Link Gallery, Jersey Museum at the beginning of May. Various promotional events are being planned together with a Podcast. The book will be available to buy from outlets across the Island.

“I believe any sponsor who supports heritage, women’s achievements, diversity and inclusion would be proud to have their name and logo attached to this publication.” Said Project Leader Catherine Kirby

Soroptimist International Jersey

Soroptimist International Jersey was chartered on 9 December 1950.  It is a service club for women, who join together to serve their local community and who raise awareness and fundraise on issues that affect women and girls worldwide.  The name ‘Soroptimist’ was coined by combining the Latin words soro ‘sister’ and optima ‘best’ and can be taken to mean ‘best for women.’

The Club’s first achievement was the building of Soroptimist House in the 1950’s for elderly women of limited means. Soroptimists were also the drive behind Mont a L’Abbe School which opened in 1967, The Jersey Women’s Refuge which opened in 1988, and Carers Jersey (formerly JACI) established in 1994. Most recently Soroptimist International Jersey have successfully hosted a Zumba Glow event fund raisers for the Jersey Women’s Refuge and pioneered the ‘No More Taboo Period’ an innovative period poverty awareness campaign.
