Senator John Le Fondré has been representing Jersey at the 56th Plenary of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly, which took place on 11th and 12th June in Sligo, in the Republic of Ireland.
This will be Senator Le Fondré’s last BIPA Plenary, following his election as Chief Minister.
Discussions at the Plenary covered matters including Brexit, British-Irish cooperation, shared economic challenges and women in Parliament.
The Plenary was addressed by a range of speakers including the British Ambassador to Ireland HE Robin Barnett and Joe McHugh TD, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the diaspora for the Republic of Ireland.
Speaking at the conclusion of the Plenary, Senator Le Fondré said:
“The British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly continues to play a crucial role in promoting cooperation between Parliamentarians and the sharing of knowledge across these Islands.
“This is particularly helpful for Jersey, allowing us to build relationships and understanding throughout the member jurisdictions, and we will continue to play an active role under a new representative.
“At a time when we are all seeking to address the challenges of Brexit, a forum which emphasises the commonality of the issues we face and the benefit of coming together to address them has rarely been more important.
“I have been honoured to play my part in the Assembly and am grateful for the enduring friendships I have developed over the years, including with representatives from our fellow Crown Dependencies.
“I was greatly touched by the warmth of congratulations I received from BIPA colleagues on my election as Chief Minister and I very much look forward to working with them in my new role.”
