Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has been included in the top ten most disabling illnesses of any kind by the World Health Organisation in relation to lost earnings and diminished quality of life.
Volunteers from the local charity Triumph over Phobia (TOP Jersey) will be giving a free talk about their work with sufferers of phobias, OCD and other related anxiety disorders at the Library between 1.10pm – 1.50pm on Wednesday 16th May.
Entitled ‘So you think you’re a little bit OCD?’ the talk is one in a series being given as part of Mental Health Awareness week.
“ We have deliberately chosen this title” explains Celia Scott Warren, the founder of the local charity, “as people often jokingly say that they are a little bit OCD if they mistakenly repeat something. But as all OCD sufferers know, OCD can have a devastating effect on an individual’s ability to lead a normal life, often depriving the person of valuable time to do other things and leading to isolation.”
TOP Jersey was established in 1992 and over the years the local group has helped many people either to overcome their problem completely or at least learn how to manage it and improve their quality of life. “We believe there are many people who suffer from either a phobia or OCD in silence and so we are delighted to have the opportunity to give this talk” adds Mrs Scott Warren “as we hope it will raise awareness of how common a phobia or OCD is and that free practical support is available at the TOP Jersey Group.”
Anyone wishing to go along to the talk, particularly either because they suffer from a phobia or OCD or care for someone who does, can reserve a place by calling the library on 448700 or can just go along on the day. You may take your lunch with you.
