Standard Bank which recently celebrated 30 years in Jersey, joined the broader Standard bank Group in celebrating Africa Day, bringing a piece of the continent to its Jersey office.
The African- bank's salute to Africa Day celebrates the continent’s people, culture and achievements and serves to demonstrate the deep connections between Africa and its international locations, including Jersey.
On the day, Standard Bank Jersey colleagues enjoyed an African inspired lunch at the bank’s offices in St Helier. All Standard Bank Offshore Group employees, including its 230-strong Jersey team also received a gift of African inspired socks from the ‘Buy-a-Brick’ programme, a Namibian charitable initiative supported by Standard Bank to raise funds for the construction of brick houses for Namibia’s shackdwelling community. The Bank’s donation through the purchase of the gifts will enable the charity to build a house for a family in Namibia.
Charles Molteno, CE & Island Head for Standard Bank Jersey added: ‘Standard Bank’s roots lie in Africa, ‘Africa is our home, we drive her growth’, and we continue through our international locations to drive sustainable, inclusive growth for the continent. Our Africa Day celebration was the perfect opportunity for Jersey colleagues to celebrate our strong connection to the continent, along with the richness and diversity of its culture and history, remembering why we do what we do and how it connects to our local Jersey community.
‘The African inspired lunch served from local Jersey vendors was exceptional, showcasing the people and businesses that bring our community to life. It was also a wonderful opportunity to support the lifechanging ‘Buy-a-Brick’ initiative which supports communities on the continent. Building an entire house for a Namibian family allows us to play a humble part in Africa’s success story.’
