Jersey Development Company (JDC) in collaboration with their joint venture partners, Groupe Legendre, recently hosted Les Quennevais School’s Design, Engineer, Construct! (DEC!) students to a site visit at the Waterfront’s Horizon Development.
Students were provided with an overview of various building works, from the sub-structure to the finishes, with an on-site understanding of the construction process and the various roles available within the industry.
The Les Quennevais students are sponsored by local contractor ROK, JDC’s main contractor for the IFC 6 office development at the International Finance Centre. JDC is delighted to support and assist ROK with this important element of engaging with students who are looking to develop key knowledge and employability, plus technical and business skills required for a professional career in architecture, design, engineering or construction.
Katie Ferreira, Head of DEC! at Les Quennevais School said “DEC! (Design, Engineer Construct!) is an exciting course that teaches students about the built environment. It covers a broad range of areas in the construction industry such as Architecture and Design, Quantity Surveying, Project & Facilities Management, as well as various areas of Engineering, to name just a few. Students benefit from the support of industry professionals who deliver specialist content to them in the classroom, and they also get to learn outside of the classroom via on-site visits, giving them a real-life learning experience. DEC provides so many opportunities for our students and is opening doors for them, including lots of the girls who are being inspired to pursue a career in the industry”.
The ROK course sponsorship enables Les Quennevais to obtain individuals from all sectors of the construction industry to assist with the course syllabus learning and provide an opportunity to explore the real world of work. Equally, this is a major step forward to nurture students into the industry, highlighting the wide range of career opportunities.
