This month sees the third anniversary of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society’s one-of-a-kind solar Photovoltaic (PV) installation at their Locale store in Grouville. The installation was undertaken by Sun Works CI Ltd, Jersey’s leading solar experts. The system is very much part of the ‘Internet of Things’ and a quick glance at the data produced shows a surprising consistency of electricity production year on year.
The project, which was completed in collaboration with Axis Mason architects and Rok Construction Ltd, saw an ‘in-roof’ Solar PV design installed at the new Co-operative Locale store in Grouville in early 2015. Based on the normal tariff the supermarket has generated and offset about £2800 worth of electricity each year. To put into context, this equivalent power generation would run approximately five Jersey homes per year.
Due to being high energy users with refrigeration and air conditioning together with a long opening hours and seven-day opening; the Co-operative will use virtually all the electricity they generate, with very little being exported to the JE grid.Mark Cox, Chief Operating Officer of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, commented about the project: “With the assistance of Sun Works CI Limited, a young and growing local company, we have future-proofed a portion of our energy costs through the installation of this efficient and environmentally friendly technology. Our Locale in Grouville is fast becoming a somewhat iconic building on the East of the Island and we love hearing the feedback we receive from customers on how supportive and proud they are of the Co-operative for demonstrating environmental awareness in Jersey.”
Mark Brandon, Managing Director at Sun Works, added: “Energy generation is now something that should be viewed as being intrinsic to a building. There are many opportunities for roof top solar in Jersey and this project has shown how well it works within a modern design. Furthermore, our data shows that the site has generated significantly more electricity than predicted year on year. So, the technology really works and Jersey is in a great position to fully adopt this kind of on-island renewable energy generation for the benefit of all”.
Sun Works CI Limited is a family-owned and operated business established in 2013 with the intention of providing cutting edge Solar PV and battery storage installations to residential and commercial properties in the Channel Islands.
