News that Google is blocking internet search results linked to child abuse is a welcome move, according to Sure.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister David Cameron announced that every household in the UK would have pornography blocked by their internet provider unless they chose to remove it. At the time, Sure said his announcement was well intended but difficult to achieve in reality.
‘Internet providers are limited by what they can achieve as filtering of a global medium is almost impossible with new sites, adverts and content being added every time. It required action by the search engines and so this recent announcement by Google is a huge breakthrough in the fight against this illegal activity,’ said a Sure spokesperson.
Google, which is the world’s biggest media firm, will introduce changes which will prevent indecent images and videos from appearing for more than 100,000 different searches. The restrictions, which have initially been designed to apply in English-speaking countries, will be expanded to cover the rest of the world and 158 other languages in the next six months.
‘This is a significant step but one that needs to be complemented by education and awareness. Sure takes its commitment to internet safety very seriously and has already been involved in a number of initiatives and will continue to look at ways in which we can further increase awareness,’ said the spokesperson.
