This year’s Lions Club of Jersey Swimarathon has just 70 slots available with 410 teams already confirmed for the five day event.

Organisers say that 54 of those spaces have been reserved but need to be confirmed and that bookings for the 2020 Swimarathon, which is in its 48th year, are ahead of where they were last year.

‘It never ceases to amaze us just how keen islanders are to get involved in the Swimarathon, which is undoubtedly the biggest charity event in Jersey. We never need to advertise, we simply contact the team captains from the previous years and the lanes fill up. It’s absolutely brilliant and we are all looking forward to a busy five days,’ said Jersey Lions’ president Lion Mark Godel.

‘Plans are well underway and we have been working with our new sponsors Ravenscroft to add some extras including a brighter check in area and a totals board so that we can celebrate the number of laps swum and the amount raised.’

The Swimarathon starts on Wednesday 11th March and will be opened by the Lieutenant Governor Sir Stephen Dalton. All of the swimmers will be raising money for the five chosen charities Brighter Futures, Brightly, Jersey Youth Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust and YouMatter.

‘Our theme for the charities chosen this year is helping teenagers to thrive. We know just how challenging teenage years can be and because we have hundreds of young people taking part in the Swimarathon, it’s fitting that we can raise up to £10,000 for each of the five charities doing amazing work with young islanders.’

Last year’s Swimarathon raised £125,000 with £50,000 being shared between the beneficiaries and the rest being used by the Lions Club of Jersey to help other deserving causes including covering the cost of holidays at Maison des Landes for deserving islanders and their families.

Haydn Taylor, managing director of Ravenscroft in Jersey, said it was fantastic that islanders were as enthusiastic as always about the Swimarathon.

‘Like those swimming in this year’s Swimarathon, our clients are diverse, ranging from the very young, who are just starting to save for the future, through to corporates, who are investing on behalf of their own clients. We are looking forward to being up at Les Quennevais to cheer on the swimmers across the five days, including getting in the water ourselves,’ he said.

‘The Swimarathon is an incredible event and it is a pleasure for Ravenscroft to be involved. As our business grows, so does our commitment to the island and we have already agreed to take on a number of other significant and high profile sponsorships this year.’

Anyone who has yet to confirm their lane booking or who is interested in taking part can contact administrator@lionsswimarathon.org

‘As we get close to the start, we’ll be promoting the Swimarathon so that as many people as possible can sponsor the swimmers and come along and cheer,’ said Mr Godel.
