Employees at Standard Chartered in Jersey have raised £2,700 to help tackle inequality and promote inclusivity amongst young people around the world, by walking and running a combined total of more than 1,300km around Jersey recently.

The five employees at the Bank covered 1,358km between them over the course of six weeks as part of Standard Chartered’s global Home Run 2023 initiative. The annual initiative sees teams from across its network in 57 countries come together to raise money for its Futuremakers programme by walking, running, cycling or swimming an aggregated distance as a group or individually.

Funds raised for Futuremakers support the Standard Chartered Foundation (SCF), a registered charity in England and Wales. The SCF focuses on tackling inequality by promoting greater economic inclusion for underserved young people from low-income households, particularly girls and people with visual impairment.

Through Home Run in Jersey, the employees walked a number of routes together taking in some of the Island’s most beautiful sights and scenery, including the Railway Walk, Waterworks Valley and across the Trinity countryside. The Bank supported each employee with volunteering leave days for participating in Home Run.

Those taking part in Jersey were Magda Motyka, Grace Njau, Tom Stewart, Nicky Vieira and Sharai Ziruma, with colleagues and family joining the group along the way.

Commenting on the team’s success, Henry Baye, CEO, Standard Chartered in Jersey, said: “Our Home Run initiative is a unique undertaking, bringing our people around the world together to complete a challenge that is hugely beneficial to our health and mental wellbeing – but which also empowers us to raise a significant sum of money to tackle inequality and help young people. I feel very proud of the team in Jersey for playing their part once again this year. Their efforts will ultimately have a really positive impact both in our local and international community.”

Initiatives like Home Run give the Bank the opportunity to make a difference in the communities it operates in. In the past, for instance, through Futuremakers, Standard Chartered helped launch a community project in Jersey, the Jersey Health Citizens Programme, delivered by St John Ambulance to support young people with their recovery from the economic fallout of the pandemic.
