Three students studying in the Island for a financial services degree are to receive £4,000 each towards the cost of their studies. The awards are being made by the Jersey Branch of STEP in an initiative to mark the 25th anniversary of the organisation in the Island.

There are currently two financial services degree courses available in Jersey – the BA (Hons) Financial Services offered by University College Jersey and the BSc (Hons) International Financial Services offered by Jersey International Business School. However there were no bursaries specific to students studying for those courses.

All three students, Miguel Garcia, who recently completed his education at De La Salle College, former Hautlieu student Gaby Soares and Tom White, who was educated in the UK, will be studying for their degrees at Jersey International Business School.

To be considered for the bursary applicants were required to submit a 2,000-word essay and a personal statement.

Announcing the winners on Thursday (13 July) at a Champagne tea party at the Royal Yacht Hotel, which was sponsored by RBC Wealth Management, STEP Jersey Vice-Chair Henry Wickham said: ‘Education and professional development are the main focus of STEP so we, as a Branch, felt that this bursary would be a fitting way to celebrate our silver anniversary.’

The branch AGM was held on the same occasion and the following officers and committee were re-elected: Chair, Naomi Rive (Highvern Trustees); Vice-Chair, Henry Wickham (Bedell Cristin); Secretary, Claire Cabot (Alter Domus); Treasurer, Kerry Emblem (Smith & Williamson); Committee, Christine Brown (LGL Trustees), Tim Cartwright, Oana Crisan (Garfield Bennett), Edward Devenport (Mourant Ozannes), Simon Morgan (Vistra), Anthony Pitcher (LGL Trustees).
