Directed by Alastair Walkinshaw and Musically Directed by Tim Evans, this is the fourth large scale musical TimpanAli Productions have mounted; these being ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Oh What A Lovely War’, and last year’s ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’.
Based on the 1950 film directed by Billy Wilder, it follows the story of faded silent-screen goddess, Norma Desmond, living in a fantasy world in her mansion on Sunset Boulevard. Impoverished screen writer Joe Gillis stumbles into her reclusive world and is seduced by her and her luxurious lifestyle. Joe becomes trapped in a claustrophobic world until his love for another woman leads him to try and break free, with dramatic consequences.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s much-loved score includes the songs Sunset Boulevard, With One Look, As If We Never Said Goodbye and The Perfect Year.
