What YOU can do help on World Homeless Day

MEDIA RELEASE: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and not Bailiwick Express, and the text is reproduced exactly as supplied to us

World Homeless Day aims to draw attention to the needs of people who experience homelessness locally and provides opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness. Although rough sleeping is the most visible form of homelessness, more young people in Jersey experience ‘hidden homelessness.’ Pushed to the brink, young people are sleeping on sofas of family and friends or living in cars with no stability or security.

JAYF provides safe, affordable, and supervised accommodation to young people experiencing homelessness in Jersey. The demand for accommodation is at its highest ever due to the impact of COVID and the cost-of-living crisis on young people, including loss of employment, rising rent and family breakdown.  In this challenging time the young people JAYF supports need our help more than ever.

How can we help this World Homeless Day?  JAYF is asking for our support in the following ways:

Understand Youth Homelessness Visit JAYF’s website and learn about the experiences of young people facing homelessness through no fault of their own.  These young people share their stories to raise your awareness of ‘hidden homelessness’ in Jersey.  Please visit www.jayf.org.je/young-peoples-stories/

Donate to JAYF’s food bank The rising cost of food and other essentials is impacting JAYFs food bank. This October the Co-Op’s, Grand Marché, St Helier allows you to donate items of your shopping to a collection basket for JAYF’s food bank.  If you go to Grand Marché, please donate an item or two and support young people who are struggling with their shopping.

Donate to JAYF online If you can’t make it to Grand Marché, you can help JAYF through challenging times by making a donation.  Donating online is quick and simple, you can start a monthly donation or make a one-off gift, JAYF receive every penny with 0% fees. You can choose to add a voluntary contribution to JustGiving on top of your donation, just know that this is completely optional. If you are able to spare a small gift today, together we can make a big difference tomorrow. Please visit https://checkout.justgiving.com/k22ozxtem4

Support JAYF on social media Following and engaging with JAYF on social media is the best way to keep up to date on what they’re up to and the ways that you can get involved.  To be part of the conversation on youth homelessness in Jersey please find and follow JAYF on Facebook and look up their new LinkedIn page. Please visit www.facebook.com/JAYFJSY and www.linkedin.com/company/jayfjsy/
