The control and management of asbestos in the workplace will be the topic at the latest in AFM’s series of winter seminars.

The free event on 26th February in Guernsey and 27th February in Jersey will look at wide range of questions including how asbestos can affect a building, what the island’s laws state, what an asbestos survey involves and what are the responsibilities of the building’s owner.

‘Asbestos is the biggest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK with around 4,000 people a year dying from an asbestos-related disease. It’s an emotive and often confusing subject and even now, after years of it being in the headlines, there are still owners and managers of buildings who don’t understand what their responsibilities are,’ said AFM managing director Darren Etasse.

The Guernsey seminar, which is from 2pm until 4pm, will be presented by Robin Gonard from the island’s Health and Safety Executive and asbestos consultant Angus McLellan from NAS Laboratories. Mr McLellan will be joined at the Jersey seminar, which is at The Royal Yacht from 10am – 12pm, by Jersey’s Health and Safety inspector Colin Myers.

‘Both Robin and Colin are leading health and safety professionals within the Channel Islands and Angus has years of experience and so they will be able to provide valuable and insightful information on the control and management of asbestos in the workplace,’ said Mr Etasse.
