AO HALL partner Louise Hall will act as the judge in a mock trial to be presented by AO Hall to highlight the civil consequences of briberyespecially for financial institutions.

At a free breakfast seminar, members of AO Hall’s litigation and fiduciary teams will stage a theoretical case, based on a recent leading case in the UK Supreme Court called Mankarious.

The trial will draw out the important policy and legal issues which underlie cases of this kind, and will also highlight practical issues for those caught up in situations involving the proceeds of crime, including who gets to keep the bribe and its proceeds?

AO Hall’s head of fiduciary, group partner Paul Buckle will set out the facts of the case and provide observations throughout the trial, assisted by members of the dispute resolution team who will make legal submissions.

‘The criminal consequences of bribery are well known but there are also civil consequences too, especially where trustees or agents, or others in authority, abuse their position by receiving undisclosed payments or commissions in return for their services,’ said Mr Buckle.
‘We felt that a mock trial would be a great way to show local trustees and members of financial institutions the implications of being caught up ina bribery situation even for an innocent third party.’

The seminar will be held in the Dorey Room at St James on Monday 8 September; registration is at 7.45am and the seminar will run from 8am to 10am.
