The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the communications profession will be a major focus of the Channel Islands PR Forum 2017.

‘PR 2022 – Future Communications’ is being hosted by the Channel Islands Group of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) in Guernsey on Wednesday 20th September.

The forum will examine emerging trends, such as technological developments, which are set to impact on public relations practice over the next five years and the implications for practitioners working in the profession in the Channel Islands.

AI specialist David Phillips will be speaking at the event where he will explore the opportunities and challenges posed by the automation of public relations.

‘Technological developments are constantly changing the world around us and in particular, AI is increasingly disrupting traditional ways of living and working,’ said Mark Oliphant, chair of the CIPR Channel Islands Group.

‘The communications industry is not immune and so I am delighted that David is able to help us explore the growing impact of automation on public relations practice and the implications for those of us working in the communications sector in the Channel Islands.’

Mr Phillips is a Fellow of the CIPR and visiting Professor of Online Public Relations at the University of Lisbon.

He began a career in public relations as a political agent for the conservative party 50 years ago and in 1979 moved into corporate affairs with the Lancer Boss Group. He then established Phillips and Company and subsequently formed the communications evaluation agency Media Measurement.

He is the author of Evaluating Press Coverage (1992), Managing Reputation in Cyberspace (1999), Online Public Relations with Philip Young (First edition 2001, Second edition 2009) and The Automation of Public Relations (2015). There is a new book on its way, which is to be published in the cloud, entitled The Future of Public Relations, a View in Time.

As well as a university lecturer, he now acts as an independent adviser to a number of international organisations, including the Bank of England.

‘I am really looking forward to hearing from David who has significant experience in the communications field and is widely recognised for his knowledge and perspectives on the role of AI and automation within the public relations profession,’ said Mr Oliphant.

‘David’s insights should be fascinating and dovetail neatly with the rest of the forum which will be looking at the range of different factors which are likely to impact public relations practice in the future.’

Other speakers at the event will include Tara Cunningham, founder of Northern Irish consultancy IslandSky and Andrew Bruce Smith, managing director of London-based consultancy Escherman.

PR 2022 – Future Communications will take place from 12.30pm to 5pm on Wednesday 20th September at the Digital Greenhouse in Guernsey.

The event is open to CIPR Members and non-CIPR Members. Bookings can be made at https://forum2017future.eventbrite.co.uk

The event media partner is BL Magazine and the event sponsor is Orchard PR.
