More than 150 islanders will be recognised at the GTA University Centre’s triennial awards ceremony at St James next week.

‘The Awards Ceremony is a really important event in our calendar, where we get the opportunity to celebrate the successes of our students with their employers and families. This year’s ceremony is particularly significant as we mark our 20th anniversary serving the island,’ said the GTA’s chief executive, Simon Le Tocq.

‘Over the last two decades, we have had the privilege of supporting thousands of local people through hundreds of formal qualifications and higher education programmes. In that time, the number and range of courses we offer has grown considerably, from just nine during our first year of operation to more than 450 this year.’

This year’s ceremony will recognise 154 islanders who have qualified in a range of disciplines offered at the GTA, including master’s degrees in corporate governance and business administration and a graduate diploma in law. The GTA will be recognising 82 people who have completed the IOD Company Direction Programme as well as celebrating employers that have achieved the Investors in People accreditation and aspiring directors who have completed the Board Apprenticeship Programme.

‘It is a wonderful occasion that rewards all of our students and participating businesses for all the hard work that they have put in,’ added Mr Le Tocq.

‘Most of our students have achieved these successes studying whilst in employment, juggling family and other commitments. This an opportunity to acknowledge some fantastic local achievements.’

Presenting certificates at the ceremony on Tuesday 22 November will be The Lieutenant-Governor, His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder KBE CB.

The Lt-Governor will also address the ceremony, along with speakers Professor John Vinney, Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University, Nick Griffin, chief commercial officer at sponsors Generali Worldwide, and Advocate David Thompson – the first GTA law graduate to be called to the Guernsey Bar.

Over the last two decades, the GTA has delivered 13 different higher education programmes, partnering with six UK universities, resulting in 335 graduates. The centre has also delivered more than 60 accredited professional programmes and provided CPD for thousands of islanders looking to keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date.

‘Our mandate established in 1996 is as relevant as ever. The GTA University Centre will continue to strive to work for the Bailiwick of Guernsey, to meet the current and future training needs of the local workforce,’ said Me Le Tocq.

‘20 years on Guernsey faces many new challenges, but the GTA continues to be a key asset to the Bailiwick. As learning and development continues to evolve, so will the GTA – we do not know what organisations will look like in 2036 but I am sure that learning and development will be at the heart of the most successful businesses and the GTA will be here to serve them.’
