Parents and grandparents in Guernsey are being offered the opportunity to learn how to code to help them support their children with their schoolwork.

A series of events are taking place as part of National Coding Week, which aims to inspire adults to learn coding and other digital skills, at the Digital Greenhouse from 19 September. The Barclays Digital Eagles will be offering their services to parents and grandparents of school children who will be learning to code as part of their school curriculum.

On Tuesday, 19 September, the ‘Cake and Code’ events for parents will be held at 12.30pm and 7.30pm both lasting one hour. On Thursday 21,September, the ‘Cake and Code’ events for grandparents will be held at 12.30pm and 7.30pm, again for an hour each.

Programming and coding is offered as part of the current school curriculum to help children develop skills in problem solving and encourage them to think creatively. Not only is it a pathway for future programmers, but will open up opportunities in a variety of careers.

“We are looking forward to the events being held and are grateful to the Digital Greenhouse for contributing their talents in this specific area of coding and programming. This is part of our wider Barclays Shared Growth Ambition for the island that focuses around three key areas of access to financial and digital empowerment, access to employment, and access to finance,” said Barclays Country Manager for Guernsey, Simon Phillips.

“People’s level of digital prowess is fast becoming a key determinant of their earning power. We need to create a new culture of lifelong learning so that the people of Guernsey can equip themselves with the skills and confidence they need to future proof their careers. We understand coding can be a daunting prospect, but the Digital Greenhouse is great at making anything accessible for anyone.

Head of Digital Development at Digital Greenhouse, Lucy Witham, said: "The Digital Greenhouse is extremely pleased to be partnering with Barclays to offer a great programme for National Coding Week.  With the growing importance of digital skills for all careers, we are often approached by parents for advice around how to best support their children with coding.  National Coding Week gives a great opportunity to reach out into the community and help develop the next generation of young innovators for the island."
